Calgary Stampede’s Grated Coconut Tops the World Again

October 16, 2008

Calgary, AB --- The Calgary Stampede’s sensational bucking horse, Grated Coconut, has again been named this year’s champion bareback bucking horse by both the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA).

This is the third straight year and fifth time overall that Grated Coconut has been chosen as the world’s top bareback bucking horse by the PRCA, while the CPRA has named the Stampede stallion as bareback Horse of the Year for the fifth time in the past six years.

“We believe that Grated Coconut has become a dynasty in the competitive world of bucking horses,” says Keith Marrington, senior manager, Racing and Rodeo, Calgary Stampede. “The two awards this year again point to the outstanding and ongoing success of the Stampede’s ‘Born to Buck’ program. The program continues to produce champion bucking stock that is performing at the highest level throughout the rodeo world.”

Most recently, at the Canadian Rodeo Tour Championships at the Stampede Corral, Dusty LaValley from Crooked Creek, Alberta spurred Grated Coconut to an 88 point ride and a major victory at this important, season-ending event. In August, the Stampede’s bareback bucking champion also took Steven Dent, from Mullen, Nebraska, to a new arena record with a 91 point performance at the Caldwell Night Rodeo, in Caldwell, Idaho.

Calgary Stampede bucking stock will continue to make regular appearances at prominent North American rodeos throughout the year, including the Canadian Finals Rodeo next month in Edmonton, the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in December and at next year’s Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, the Calgary Stampede, from July 3 – 12, 2009.
