Lamaze Leads Canadian Show Jumpers to Strong Second

May 2, 2008

Lummen, Belgium --- Eric Lamaze was the equal best individual, with a perfect performance in today's show jumping nations cup in Lummen, Belgium. Thanks to Lamaze's flawless performance, riding Hickstead, and a near-perfect performance from Ian Millar on In Style, the Canadian team finished equal second with France and Italy. It is the third perfect performance for Lamaze in three consecutive nations cups, strengthening his status as an Olympic medal favourite.

Canada's final score was 12 faults, just one knockdown away from Norway's winning score of 8. A nations cup is contested over two rounds, with the worst score from each four-rider team discarded in each round. Lamaze and Hickstead were one of only four entries that were faultless over both rounds. Riding last for Canada, Ian Millar and In Style had one knockdown in the first round and were flawless in the second.

Jill Henselwood was the lead-off rider for Canada on Special Ed, incurring two knockdowns in the first round and one in the second. Mac Cone rode Ole to 4 faults in round one and 8 in round two.

Fourteen teams contested this nations cup, one of two team competitions in which the Canadians will compete, as part of Olympic selection and preparation. All major European countries, as well as Mexico and Saudi Arabia were on hand.

Lamaze, of Schomberg, Ontario; Millar, of Perth, Ontario, Henselwood, of Oxford Mills, Ontario; and Cone, of King City, Ontario will compete as a team again in two weeks in Madrid.
