Henselwood Leads As Canadians Dominate $75,000

Show Jumping in California

March 2, 2008

Thermal, CA --- Last year's Pan American Games individual show jumping gold medalist, Jill Henselwood of Oxford Mills, Ontario won the $75,000 grand prix today in Thermal, California, near Indio. She was riding the 13-year-old, Dutch-bred gelding Black Ice. Black Ice was not her Pan American Games mount, but earned her the Canadian national show jumping title in 2005.

To earn today's win, Henselwood had to defeat 32 starters and then race to victory in a six-way tie-breaker. Her own protégé, Kim Farlinger, of Annan, Ontario, gave Henselwood the strongest challenge despite a strong international field. Farlinger was on her promising grand prix up-and-comer, Cordoba.

Third place today went to a Canadian resident who represents Ireland. Veteran Eddie Macken, now residing in British Columbia, rode Tedechine Sept to third place in the tie-breaker. Settling for fourth, was John Pearce, of Stouffville, Ontario, on Chianto. Pearce rounded out a top-four sweep for Canadian residents, and assured three of the top four placings for Canadians.

Henselwood opted to spend the winter competing in the California series, although most Olympic show jumping team candidates are competing in Florida. The team will be selected subjectively by a committee in June. Henselwood has two Olympic-calibre mounts, including today's winner and her Pan American Games mount, Special Ed. She is considered a front-runner for a team berth. Today's fourth-place finisher John Pearce is also a strong candidate.
