Young Talent Showcased at the 2007 CDI-W 3* Ottawa Summer Classic

Ottawa, Ontario --- Young talent was on display at the 2007 CDI-W 3*/Y/J/P/CH/YH Ottawa Summer Classic, held June 21st -24th at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.
Featuring a full weekend of competition ranging from Training to Grand Prix, the classes included those for the younger generation, both human and equine.
In the FEI Young Horse Six-Year-Old Preliminary Caroline Pepin of Mont St-Hilaire, QC rode her Oldenburg gelding HG San Classic to first place, scoring 76.800%. Receiving identical scores of 73.800% to tie for second place was Lee Tubman of Dunnville, ON aboard De La Rosa, a Hannoverian mare owned by Ducat Developments Ltd. and 2007 Pan American Games team member Tom Dvorak from Hillsburgh, ON, paired with Augustin Walch’s Hannoverian stallion Viva’s Salieri. Third place went to Quebec native Claude Diotte of Ste-Marthe, who earned a score of 65.800% with his Hannoverian-cross gelding Wedekind.
The FEI Young Horse Six-Year-Old Final saw a shuffling of results, with Dvorak and Viva’s Salieri earning first place on a score of 76%. Tubman had a close finish for second place, scoring an even 75% with De La Rosa, while Diotte rode Wedekind to third place, scoring 68.400%.
Neil McIntosh of Ste-Adele, QC made a clean sweep of the FEI Young Horse Five-Year-Old division, scoring 77.800% in the Preliminary and 76.800% in the Final, paired with Canadian dressage veteran Evi Strasser’s Oldenburg stallion Argo Conti Tyme. Dvorak took second place with a score of 73.400%, this time paired with Marilyn Dietrich’s Westphalian gelding Freixenet. Third position went to westerner Lindsay Stroh of Camrose, AB, who scored 71.400% with Archie Stroh’s Oldenburg mare Fadora. In the Final, Francine Bell of Vercheres, QC came in behind McIntosh, earning a score of 73.200% paired with Guy Rivard’s Oldenburg stallion Royal T. Third position went to Ottawa area native, Susanne Dutt-Roth of Merickville, ON, who scored 68.600% with Wanda Jamieson’s Hannoverian gelding Di Stefano.
As for the young human talent, Leah Wilson of Orangeville, ON was highly successful in the competitive FEI Young Rider Division, sweeping all three classes. Paired with Westside Lady, a 12-year-old Hannoverian mare owned by Susan Platz, Wilson claimed the Team and Individual classes, scoring 67.378% and 67.450% respectively, before moving on to the Freestyle, where her performance to Broadway show tunes earned a score of 68.700%.
“I am so happy with Westside Lady, she really pulled through for me,” commented Wilson, who is hoping to represent Canada at the 2007 North American Young Rider Championships in August with Westside Lady. “I have only been riding her for a few months, so each day is a new adventure, but I am getting to know her better.”
Finishing second in the Freestyle was Cecile von Martels of Ridgetown, ON, who rode her 11-year-old Westphalian gelding Downtown to a score of 66.65%.
Riding a second mount, her 13-year-old Russian Warmblood gelding Dostoevsky, affectionately called ‘Ivan’, Wilson also took second place in the Young Rider Team Test, scoring 65.689%, and third in the Individual (65.950%).
“Ivan is such a trooper, I can go in the ring and know he’ll be there for me,” said Wilson, explaining that Ottawa was only Ivan’s second competition this season. “I know I can always count on Ivan, and I can’t say enough good things about him.”
Julie Watchorn of Schomberg, ON rounded out the top three in the Team Test on a score of 65.556% paired with her 14-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare Quintesse. The duo also took second place in the Individual, scoring 67.100%. Watchorn and Quintesse are looking to represent Canada for a third time at the North American Young Riders Championships, having previously ridden under the maple leaf in 2004 and 2005.
In the FEI Junior division, another Ottawa local, Jade Deter of Kemptville, ON rode her 10-year-old Westphalian gelding Mastermind to a win in all three classes. The duo scored 65.300% in the Team Test, followed by 65.050% in the Individual, and wrapped up with a score of 69.800% in the Freestyle. Annie-Pier Venne of L’Assomption, QC earned second in the Team Test riding her 11-year-old Westphalian stallion Step Up, while Katrina Noonan of Beaverbank, NS placed third with her 12-year-old Appaloosa mare Lochland’s Llewella. Jamie Holland from Caledon, ON won the blue ribbon in both the Individual Test, and Freestyle (69.800%), partnered with her nine-year-old Westphalian mare Fleurina. Third place went to Elizabeth Allum of Orleans, ON with Meredith Allum’s 10-year-old Hannoverian gelding Rohenstern.
Just two entries contested the FEI Children division, which saw Vivian Cornell of Kingston, ON take both the Team and Individual Tests paired with Kathy Cornell’s 16-year-old Trakehner mare Heidschnucke. Kaitlin Bourgon of Elgin, QC took double second place finishes riding Nathalie Theriault’s seven-year-old Paint gelding Finding Nemo.
Tatianna Turcotte of Mont-Royal, QC took the FEI Pony Division, riding her 11-year-old Connemara gelding Serenity’s Dream On. The duo scored 63.211% in the Team, 63.650% in the Individiual, and wrapped up the competition in the Freestyle, where they scored 68.400%. Mathilde Blais-Tetreault of Montreal earned second place finishes in both the Team and Individual paired with her 11-year-old Morgan mare Miss Honeychurch. Rounding out the top three was Vivian Cornell of Kingston, ON and her 11-year-old Welsh gelding Secret Agent Man.
The 2007 CDI-W 3*/Y/J/P/CH/YH Ottawa Summer Classic also featured a host of FEI and National classes, including a qualifier for the 2008 World Cup Final, and drew more than 250 competitors. The international judging panel included Stephen Clarke (FEI ‘O’ – GBR), Anne Gribbons (FEI ‘O’ – USA), Elizabeth McMullen (FEI ‘O’ – Canada), Marian Cunningham (FEI ‘I’ – PER), and Peter Holler (FEI ‘I’ – GER).
“Ottawa is a great competition and is really well run,” commented Wilson. “The ring was presented beautifully and the organization was very good. It is such a nice show.”
