"Canada One" Day One at Spruce Meadows
June 28, 2007
Spruce Meadows, Calgary, Alberta --- Spruce Meadows was back in full swing today with five tournament rings running hosting 600 rounds of jumping on the first day of the “Canada One” Tournament. The day saw the return of the big name FEI riders after a week off to give way to the “Skyliner”, a Junior/Amateur Tournament.
The feature events today were the 1.45m WestJet Cup and the 1.50m $60,000 Great-West Life Cup on the Meadows on the Green Ring. Both events featured star power such as Beezie Madden (USA), Eric Lamaze (CAN), Jill Henselwood (CAN) and Richard Spooner (USA).
The WestJet Cup saw 51 entries through the Meadows on the Green start gate. The evening was most rewarding for Jill Henselwood who came out of the ring victorious.
The feature event of the evening was the Great-West Life Cup. Of the event’s 32 entries, six jumped clear and earned spots in the jump-off. It was Henselwood’s night to remember as she scored the daily double at Spruce Meadows winning the Great-West Life Cup in a jump-off that saw the likes of Eric Lamaze and Lauren Hough (USA) unable to match her performance.
“As the lead-off rider in the jump-off, I knew they would be chasing hard,” said Henselwood in the victory circle. “Special Ed’s stride and scope paid off as he ate up the ground and cleared every fence. I am very happy with the way he’s going,” said the two-time Spruce Meadows North American Show Jumping Champion.
Henselwood’s victory brought to a close the first day of the Spruce Meadows ‘Canada One’ Tournament with competitions continuing through until Sunday.
