Katherine Newman Goes Back to Back with Nairobi at Wachovia Showplace Spring Spectacular II

Wayne, IL --- Katherine Newman and Nairobi earned the Large Junior 16-17 Hunter division championship once again this past weekend at the Wachovia Showplace Spring Spectacular II. This is the second tricolor for the pair at the Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, IL. The previous week, they championed at the Showplace Spring Spectacular I Horse Show after winning top ribbons.
Sixteen-year-old Newman rides at her family’s farm, Allwyn Court, and trains with her parents Kathy and Gerry Newman. Based out of Wellington, FL, the young rider travels to shows to compete with horses from her farm, and she often picks up catch-rides on horses owned by other riders. This weekend she piloted Nairobi for trainers Nora and Morgan Thomas. The bay gelding is owned by Kimberly Wang, and Newman started showing the mount this spring.
“Nairobi was awesome,” she commented. “We won three classes this weekend! We were also fourth over fences and fourth in the hack. Nairobi and I were ninth in the hunter classic on Friday, and in yesterday’s classic, we scored an 87 and 88.5 and ended up third. He really felt great. He seems to get better and better every time he goes in the ring.”
She also rode Cayman in the Large Junior Hunters for Amelia McArdle. “Amelia went to Spruce Meadows to show her jumpers, so I showed Cayman for her,” explained Newman. “I had never ridden him before, but he was really fun. He has a great jump, and you can really trust him.” The duo captured three seconds, a third, and a seventh place. They also finished fifth in the hunter classic on Saturday after they earned scores of 84 and 85.3.
Newman will meet up with her parents and the rest of Allwyn Court at the Lake Placid Horse Shows in New York on June 27. She will compete in the junior hunters, the equitation, and the junior jumper division.
