Sussex, NB --- “This is the largest turn-out of competitors we’ve ever had for our first show of the season,” said Wayne Wilson, a member of the Show Committee of the show’s sponsoring organization, the Maritime Quarter Horse Association. Organizers were delighted to have a three percent increase in the number of competitors attending the show this year.
People came from throughout the Maritimes and the North Eastern United States to participate in a wide variety of classes.
Several hundred spectators looked on as horses from weanlings to mature saddle horses were exhibited for the judges. Horses were shown “in hand” (on a lead line) as well as ridden in both English and Western riding competition classes. The barrel racers provided excitement with their speedy runs and other riders demonstrated how well their horses were trained to respond to the subtlest of cues in the trail classes.
The next Quarter Horse show will be on the long week-end in August.
In the meantime there will be a Reining Horse Show next week-end (June 30 – July 1) that will include a Drill Team Competition as well. Both are huge crowd pleasers so spectators are encouraged to come early to get a good seat.
The Junior riders take over on the week-end of July 7-8 as they participate in the New Brunswick Equestrian Association’s second annual Junior Development Clinic. Skilled trainers will work with aspiring junior riders to improve their skills in several competitive disciplines including show jumping, western riding and dressage. There’ll also be Cattle Penning that week-end in the Ronnie Wilkins Memorial Cattle Penning Ring.
July 14-15 will see the Morgan and Arabian Horses returning to compete together at the Show Centre.
