Double Trouble at Spruce Meadows on Sunday
June 10, 2007
Spruce Meadows, Calgary, AB --- The sun shone for the last day of the Spruce Meadows “National” Tournament. The ATCO Structures Double Slalom is a fan favourite at Spruce Meadows, there is no better way to get crowds cheering than to have horses race against each other through a course of jumps.
The blood was pumping by the fifth and final round of the ATCO Structures Double Slalom. Canadian Jill Henselwood, riding Boomer, faced defending champion Mark Armstrong on Rex. It was neck and neck until the end when Jill knocked her second rail, the 6 seconds in penalties added was too much time to overcome. Mark Armstrong was able to defend his title and is the 2007 Champion of the ATCO Structures Double Slalom. Mark explained after his win, “It felt similar to last years win. I try to stay to the same side for the whole time.”
A crowd of close to 34,000 came out to Spruce Meadows on Sunday of the “National” Tournament to watch the inaugural NEXEN Cup Derby. The course, designed by Leopoldo Palacios, put up a strong fight as riders were finishing with as many as 50 faults. That was of course until Beezie Madden and Judgement entered the ring as the second to last entry in the 23 horse field. The pair who won the Spruce Meadows “National” Derby last summer showed the rest of the competitors what it takes to win. Madden commented on the new course after her win, “It's technical, it’s longer, so fatigue sets in. Your horse needs a lot of heart and stamina,”
Beezie Madden and Judgement were also defended their Spruce Meadows Canadian Championship, an honour the pair have earned 3 times in their illustrious Spruce Meadows career.
