Junior Rider Outshines Olympic Veterans in $25,000 Turtle Lane Farm Open Jumper Classic CSI 3* at Lake Placid Horse Show

June 30, 2006

Lake Placid, NY --- Although threats of severe thunderstorms were predicted for upstate New York today, an uplifting sun intermittently shined between showers at the Lake Placid Horse Show. The competition, held in Lake Placid, NY from June 27-July 2, is encircled by the stunning Adirondack Mountains. The town, similar aesthetically to a Swiss Alpine Village, was host to the 1980 Olympic Games. The remaining Olympic ski jump, which towers adjacent to the show grounds, adds character and reminds horse show exhibitors of the town’s impressive athletic history.

The highlight today in the Richard M. Feldman Grand Prix Arena was the $25,000 Turtle Lane Farm Open Jumper Classic CSI 3*. The competition was held on grass footing and conducted under FEI rules and Article 238.2, Time First Jump Off. The course, designed by Pierre Jolicoeur, soared at 1.50 meters, with spreads averaging 1.60 meters in width.

Out of a pool of 37 horse and rider combinations, only eight entries finished fault free over the first course. Jimmy Torano and Marlo jumped clear; however, the pair’s time of 84.88 earned one time fault for exceeding the 84 second Time Allowed.

In the jump off, Larioso and McLain Ward returned first in the order. Lowering the height of the second element in a one stride combination, McLain finished with a score of four faults and a time of 35.96 seconds. Judy Garofalo Torres entered the arena next aboard Oliver III, owned by Higher Ground Farm. She set the pace with a clear round and crossed the finish timers with a fast time of 35.23 seconds, which would hold up for second place.

Jeffery Welles and Armani, owned by Kimmel Yaeger Equine, took a shot in the tie breaker next and finished faultless, but their time of 36.53 seconds revealed that Torres still gripped the lead. Margie Engle, who recently recovered from a bad fall while competing in the Samsung Super League in Europe, returned to the show ring with Hidden Creek’s Oscar. The duo jumped around the short course smoothly, but they tripped the timers in a slower time of 39.42 seconds.

Trezebees and 16 year old Addison Phillips, the only junior to compete in the class, followed in the order behind Engle over the short course. Phillips, of New York City, blazed around the jump off, and her horse’s gallop and tight turns proved to be the key to their impressive time of 34.08 seconds. Applause roared as the junior talent topped the leader board above the names of some of our nation’s top grand prix riders.

Rain showers began once again as Cataro Ask and Simon Nizri rode in to take on Phillips’ time. Nizri amassed 15 faults in the tie breaker and crossed the finish line in 51.92 seconds. Darragh Kerins and Hot Wheels, owned by Miranda Fischer, awaited the start tone next in hopes of taking over the lead. Jumping a clear round, Kerins clocked in at 37.59 seconds and failed to match the young rider’s time.

The last challenger in the jump off was Ken Berkley aboard Carlos Boy, owned by Krista Weisman. The score board displayed that Carlos Boy jumped faultlessly and galloped home in 36.05 seconds, more than two seconds slower than the leader’s time. Today’s victory gallop was led by Addison Phillips and Trezebees, who took home top honors and a purse of $7,500. The Olympic atmosphere was in the air with the setting and all of the veterans in the class, but today it radiated from a young hopeful who led the victory gallop.

The I Love New York Horse Show, also held in Lake Placid, NY and produced by Stadium Jumping Inc., begins on Tuesday July 4th and continues through Sunday the 9th.
