Gayford Takes Early Lead in Canadian League World Cup Standings
June 28, 2006
Ottawa, Ontario --- Margie Gayford of Sharon, ON, has taken the early lead in the Canadian League World Cup Standings following a fifth place finish in the $100,000 CN Performance World Cup Qualifier Grand Prix held June 18 at the Spruce Meadows “Continental” Tournament in Calgary, AB.
Riding Stuntman, a 10-year-old Hanoverian gelding owned by Shawn Littler, Gayford maneuvered through the technical course with no jumping faults, but a single time fault kept her from joining the jump-off. Eventual winner Lisa Silverman of the United States riding Obelix R and Canada’s own Jill Henselwood with Special Ed were the only two combinations to advance to the tie-breaker. For her fifth place finish, Gayford received nine World Cup points, which put her atop the leaderboard at this early stage of the game.
Currently in second position with six points is Strathmore, AB, resident Tamie Phillips who finished ninth aboard Lucas. Interestingly, Phillips and her mother, Merle Gardner, bred the 10-year-old Canadian Warmblood gelding, so grand prix success is especially sweet. The pair managed to clock in under the stiff time allowed, but unfortunately dropped one rail to finish with four faults.
Laurie Bucci of St. Hilaire, QC, is sitting in third position after earning four World Cup points with Quidam’s Ramiro, a nine-year-old Holsteiner gelding owned by Claude Dufresne. In the pair's first World Cup Qualifier together, they incurred eight faults to finish in 18th position.
With two World Cup points is Erynn Ballard of Hillsburgh, ON, who placed 23rd with Looking Back Farm's 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding, Robin van Roosendael. Sydney Chapman, the 19-year-old rookie from Duncan, BC, rounds out the top five, holding one point after finishing in 29th position with her 10-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare, Cassandra B Z.
The second event in the Canadian World Cup League will take place on Saturday, July 1, during the Spruce Meadows ‘Canada One’ Tournament in Calgary, AB, followed by the Internationale Jumping Blainville in Quebec on July 9.
There are some changes to the Canadian World Cup League this year. Historically, the Canadian League World Cup Final ended during Toronto's famed Royal Horse Show. However, the Canadian League has been now been extended into the 2007 season and will conclude with the final World Cup Qualifying event held in the United States, CSI-W San Juan Capistrano, CA, from April 4-8. The extension of the Canadian League allows horse-rider combinations competing in Florida and California to gain valuable points in the hopes of being one of two Canadian representatives at the 2007 World Cup Final in Las Vegas, USA, from April 19-22.
