Ottawa, Ontario --- Over a weekend that finally displayed true summer weather, Canadian dressage riders racked up the ribbons in the FEI classes at the CDI3* Ottawa Summer Dressage Classic, held June 22-25 at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.
Evi Strasser of St. Adele, QC returned home with Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle wins to add to her collection after scoring 66.875% and 71.750% respectively, aboard her veteran partner, the 11-year-old Oldenburg gelding Quantum Tyme.
Strasser, recently chosen as a member of the Canadian Equestrian Dressage Team at the prestigious World Equestrian Games coming up this August in Aachen, Germany, used the Ottawa competition as preparation for European competitions, including the Games.
“I am slowly building Quantum Tyme up to peak at the World Equestrian Games. We are doing the ‘polishing’ for clean, precise performances where we are perfectly in tune with each other,” explained Strasser. “On Freestyle day, he let me ride him the best ever throughout the test. It was unbelievable…magic.”
The Grand Prix also saw Halifax, NS native Cheryl Meisner put in a solid performance, scoring 65.417% to receive second place on Lobster Point Farms’ 9-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion, Paganini. Tom Dvorak of Hillsburgh, ON secured third with a score of 63.374% on Westside Lady, the 11-year-old Hanoverian mare owned by Susan Platz. Nancy MacLachlan of Terra Cotta, ON placed fourth aboard Ariston, while King City, ON native Jessica Costello finished fifth with Litmanen.
The results in the Grand Prix Freestyle were an exact replica of the Grand Prix with the second through fifth place riders scoring 66.500% (Meisner), 66.050% (Dvorak), 65.250% (MacLachlan) and 62.750% (Costello).
The Grand Prix Special saw just two competitors, with Meisner receiving the top score of 61.800% aboard her second Grand Prix mount, the 12-year-old Trakehner gelding, Hesperos, owned by Lobster Point Farms. Australia native Karin Davis, who currently resides in Uxbridge, ON wasn’t far behind, scoring 60.640% with the 21-year-old Australian Thoroughbred gelding, Mighty Heights.
Diane Creech of Caistor Centre, ON took top honours in the Prix St. Georges, scoring 68.800% aboard Wiona, the 9-year-old Hanoverian mare owned by Douglas & Louise Leatherdale. The duo repeated their win in the Intermediate I, earning the impressive score of 70.350%. Andrea Bresee from nearby Brockville, ON was close behind in both classes, finishing second in the Prix St. Georges after earning 67.950%, and third in the Intermediate I, scoring 68.200% with Raffles, the 12-year-old Swedish Warmblood mare, owned by Gina Smith and Faith Berghuis. Strasser closed out the top three in the Prix St. Georges, scoring 67.700% aboard her 7-year-old Westphalian gelding Foto Tyme. The duo moved up a spot in the Intermediate I, receiving second place with a score of 68.950%.
“I was impressed with how Foto Tyme handled the big show. He rose to the occasion and showed off what he can do,” said Strasser, who rode the gelding to a 10th place finish at the 2005 World Breeders’ Championships in Germany, and hopes to qualify him for the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In the Intermediate 1 Freestyle, Bresee and Raffles secured first after a brilliant performance earned them 71.550%. Dvorak earned second with a score of 67.750%, this time aboard Alyson Carpenter’s five-year-old gelding, Fortissimo. Gillian Sutherland of Unionville, ON placed third, scoring 67.200% with her 7-year-old Oldenburg gelding Great Tyme.
“The competition was extremely well done, with good organization,” commented Strasser. “I was extremely pleased with the security and appreciated the high fence around the show ring.”
