June 23, 2006

Calgary, AB – For the first time ever, western art aficionados will have the opportunity to purchase the original artwork for the Calgary Stampede poster. The painting by Paul Van Ginkel, a renowned Calgary artist, will be auctioned live at the Western Art Auction on Thursday, July 13.

The Alberta College of Art and Design educated artist was commissioned by the Stampede to reflect the pride, cowboy values, mood and vibrancy of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, while confirming the western heritage through his painting.

“The honour to paint the Calgary Stampede poster is a distinction every artist dreams of,” says Van Ginkel. “It represents the pinnacle in western art and is certainly a highlight in my career.”

Van Ginkel’s original artwork will then be auctioned on July 13 at 6:00 p.m. in the Palomino Room, Roundup Centre on Stampede Park. Tickets are $60 and are available through the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede at (403) 261-0101.

“The Western Art Auction is honoured to showcase one of our leading local artists, Paul Van Ginkel, as for the first time, someone will be able to own his original artwork used to create the Stampede’s world famous poster for 2007,” says Evelyn Main, chair of the Western Art Auction committee.
