Lucky Charms for Silverman
June 18, 2006
Calgary, AB --- A little extra luck never hurt anyone and for Lisa Silverman, her two children Lucy and Jack were all the luck she needed to win the CN Performance World Cup.
With her kids cheering her on from the sidelines, Silverman and the Dutch gelding Obelix R managed one of only two clears in the first round, which was riddled with dropped rails and time faults for other riders.
Multiple combinations and tight turns made the course technically difficult but that’s just the kind of course Silverman prefers.
“I tend to like technical courses, but this one had more people with time faults than rails down,” says Silverman. “There was more than just one variable.”
For Silverman, who works as a real estate broker and rides on the weekend, this is her first major Spruce Meadows victory since the 1980s when she was a regular competitor on the international circuit. After taking time off to raise her family, Silverman returned to riding only a couple years ago.
“I’ve always loved this sport, I’m working hard but I still have a long way to go,” says Silverman. “But it always helps to have a little positive reinforcement.”
After going first in the jump-off with a good time and one rail down, all she could do was wait as Canada’s Jill Henselwood took the field.
When Henselwood also took a rail halfway through, she knew she had to pick up the pace. However the roar of victory that came from Silverman’s fans when Henselwood knocked her second rail down was all the confirmation she needed to know she had won.
Henselwood’s spirits weren’t damped by her second place finish though, she and her mount Special Ed had a very successful two weeks at Spruce Meadows, helping in her bid to be a part of the Canadian Team heading to Aachen, Germany for the World Equestrian Games (WEG). “When he’s in a winning mood he’s really fun to ride,” says Henselwood about Special Ed. “Playful in a way that’s like ‘let’s go get them.’”
The Canadian team selectors were using today’s CN Performance World Cup as the final event in their Observation Trials. Jump Canada is expected to announce the official team going to the WEG early next week.
Today’s results for Mexican riders Jaime Guerra and Eduardo Salas are sure to impress. Both riders finished with clear rounds but didn’t beat the clock. The added time fault for each placed them third and fourth respectively.
The Mexican team selectors for the WEG will continue to monitor their rider’s performances on the Spruce Meadows Summer Tour, with their final selection trial being the ATCO Power Queen Elizabeth II Cup at the “North American” Tournament in July.
Week three of the Spruce Meadows Summer Tour continues with the “Skyliner” Junior/Amateur Tournament (June 22 – 25).
