More than Ribbons at Stake in CN Performance World Cup

June 16, 2006

(SPRUCE MEADOWS, Calgary, AB): For Canadian Show Jumpers vying for the chance to wear the maple leaf at the World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Aachen, Germany this August, it all comes down to Sunday afternoon at the Spruce Meadows “Continental”.

The tournament’s feature event, the CN Performance World Cup will be the deciding factor in the Jump Canada selection process. Riders and their horses have been evaluated carefully over the past two weeks at Spruce Meadows in order to determine who will best represent Canada in Aachen.

Ian Millar and Eric Lamaze must be feeling confident going in to Sunday’s World Cup event. Both riders had a solid “National” Tournament, racking up their share of victories and all but securing their place on the team.

But for Mario Deslauriers, who had a shaky “National”, the CN Performance World Cup could be do-or-die. Will he and his 12 year-old Belgian Warmblood, Paradigm pass the test?

Jill Henselwood faces challenges of a different sort: her own students. It might be a case of the student surpassing the teacher, as Kelly Small and Kimberly Farlinger continue to challenge her in the ring. There can be no denying the promise of these two young riders but it remains to be seen if they can make a name for themselves on the Canadian Team.

The health and safety of his horses is paramount in Chris Pratt’s mind heading in to the weekend. His number one Grand Prix horse, Rivendell sustained a minor injury last week and he may choose a second mount on Sunday.

Canadian riders aren’t the only ones under the gun this Sunday. Mexico will also be using the CN Performance World Cup as their final trial for the Mexican team heading to the WEG.

While the American team has already been chosen for Aachen, Norman Dello Joio will certainly be feeling the pressure. A win in the CN Performance World Cup on Sunday will ensure Dello Joio a $50,000 bonus in the $1Million CN Precision Series as he won the first leg of the Series during the “National”.

Last year Olympic Gold Medalist Beezie Madden won two legs of the $1 Million CN Precision Series, she will be riding on Sunday to see if she can repeat her 2005 win.

The CN Performance World Cup begins at 2:00 pm on Sunday on Meadows on the Green.
