Dello Joio Scores Hat-Trick
June 10, 2006
Spruce Meadows, Calgary, Alberta --- They say that good news comes in threes, and when it comes to Norman Dello Joio and the CN Reliability Grand Prix, the old adage certainly holds true.
"Stormin' Norman" lived up to this nickname Saturday, charging through the first round of the Grand Prix, then coming back last in a four horse jump-off to capture his third CN Reliability Grand Prix title in 5 years.
"I'm naturally nervous anyway," says Dello Joio when asked about his order in the jump-off "But it is a distinct advantage to go last...you don't have to stand around and hope someone else messes up."
Of course it helps that Dello Joio was riding Glasgow, the same Dutch Warmblood who helped him jump to victory in the 2002 and 2005 CN Reliability Grand Prix. The win this year puts Dello Joio back on track in the $1 Million CN Precision Series.
"We did very little with him after Florida (Winter Equestrian Festival)," says Dello Joio. "It's a matter of him being very fresh."
It was a great North American showdown with Canada's Eric Lamaze finishing in second place aboard Hickstead, more than a full second behind Dello Joio. Mexico's Santiago Lambre rounded out the top three aboard Campino.
Lamaze is having a record tournament. Of the 11 horses he has ridden in the International Ring this week, 10 have finished in the top five. "I'm really on top of my game and my horses are in really good shape," says Lamaze.
Following his silver medal in the CN Reliability Grand Prix he rode to victory in the TransCanada Parcours de Chasse aboard Telegraph, the same 12 year-old New Zealand Sport Horse that Bruce Goodin (NZL) won the event with last year.
"He's won so many times that next time he can go by himself," laughs Lamaze who borrowed Telegraph from his student Katie McVean for the event.
Lamaze will see if he can continue his winning streak with Telegraph tomorrow in the Shell Cup Derby. The Shell Cup, along with being one of the most challenging courses in the world, is also the final event used to determine the winner of the Spruce Meadows Canadian Championship TM. So far Lamaze leads the standings, with Beezie Madden and Norman Dello Joio close behind. All three are slated to start in Sunday's Shell Cup.
