Calgary, AB --- No one needs to tell Eric Lamaze that the Summer Tour at Spruce Meadows potentially holds great things for him. You can tell by the grin on his face as he exits the International Ring that he already knows it. The 38 year-old Ontario native dominated Thursday night at the “National” by winning both the Luscar Cup 1.50m and the Duke Energy Cup 1.60m
What makes his victories all the more fulfilling is that in both events Lamaze was riding horses that he has been patiently training to be international jumpers from a young age. Narcotique De Muze, a 10 year-old Belgian Warmblood mare, produced 2 clear rounds in the Luscar Cup, just managing to hold on to the lead over second place finisher Richard Spooner (USA).
In the night’s second event, the Duke Energy Cup, Lamaze guided his 10 year-old Dutch stallion Hickstead successfully through the first round and jump off, securing another victory. “Hickstead is my top horse,” says Lamaze. “He’s a really nice, young horse and he’s just back from Europe, so he’s really ready for here.” Lamaze and Hickstead finished an impressive third in last month’s Aachen Grand Prix.
Even though he knows that his performance at the “National” is being watched as part of the Canadian team selection for the World Equestrian Games in Germany in late August, Lamaze insists that he’s not feeling any pressure. “I’m not trying to prove anything,” says Lamaze. “The team that won the Nations’ Cup (in Wellington, Florida) … we all put in strong performances… we beat the American gold medal team from the Olympics.”
After his performance tonight, Lamaze is in the lead for the Spruce Meadows Canadian ChampionshipTM . Americans Beezie Madden and Norman Dello Joio are currently in second and third place. The final two events for the Spruce Meadows Canadian ChampionshipTM will be the CN Reliability Grand Prix on Saturday and the Shell Cup Derby on Sunday.
