Hurricane Topples Opposition During the $7,500 Carma Developments / RBC Financial Group Open Welcome Jumper

Edmonton, Alberta --- Last night's Open Welcome Jumper class had spectators on the edge of their seats until the last moment. Out of a field of 21 competitors, 13 went clear in the first round and returned for the jump-off.

Edmonton's Jaclyn Duff, riding Phanta, was the second to return and set a blistering pace of 42.34 seconds over the 1.4m high course claiming first place, a position she held against eight challengers, until North Vancouver's Gary Brewster and Watermark unseated them with a clear round in a time of 42.22 seconds. Brewster's lead held against the remaining challengers, including his own second mount, Royal Vialli, until the final competitor entered the ring - Brewster again, this time riding Hurricane.

Brewster and Hurricane attacked the course at a blistering pace and handily won the class with a fast, clear round in a time of 41.31 seconds.

An Open Welcome Jumper class is usually the first class at that level, prior to the major Grand Prixs, and is an opportunity for riders and horses to test their mettle for the coming competitions. Course Designer Peter Holmes, of Victoria, BC, set a challenging course and gave the competitors a taste of what they can expect in the remaining Grand Prixs. As one spectator commented, after seeing the difficulty of the course, "Welcome to the real world!"

If this class was any indication, competition in the Grand Prix ring will be fierce and exciting for the rest of the week!

Thursday, June 1, 6:30 pm $20,000 ATCO Cup

Friday, June 2, 7:30 pm $20,000 National Bank Financial / Paramount Energy Trust "Dash for Cash"

Saturday, June 3, 3:15 pm $35,000 Kubota Cup Grand Prix

The action isn't confined to the Grand Prix ring. Horse lovers and sport lovers of all ages can enjoy watching excellent competition from the smallest ponies up in three show rings for the rest of the week.

Competitors at this year's show range from 10-year-old children in Pony divisions to a top field of Open Grand Prix riders. Attending the 2006 Northlands Horse Show will be a wonderful experience for the whole family and, best of all, admission and parking are free. Whether you are watching the competitions or simply wandering the grounds admiring the horses, the 2006 Northlands Horseshow provides something for everyone.

The Edmonton Northland's Horse Show is also proud to host "Bringing Home the Dream", sponsored by Milestone Farms and Woodlawn Farms. This is a unique show jumping competition and fundraiser in support of breast cancer research at the Cross Cancer Institute. The goal is to surpass the $80,000 raised in

2005 for breast cancer research. The competition will take place at noon on Sunday, June 4th. Unique to this type of show jumping competition, riders must set their own course on the fly in order to accumulate the most points - guaranteed to be fast and furious with no predetermined course to follow.
