Jill Henselwood Wins 2005 Canadian Show Jumping Championships
November 9, 2005
Ottawa, Ontario --- Following the second round of the Canadian Show Jumping Championships held November 5, Jill Henselwood of Oxford Mills, ON, was crowned the winner of the 2005 Canadian Show Jumping Championships. The excitement began on November 4, opening day at this year’s Royal Horse Show, held as part of the 83rd annual Royal Agricultural Winter fair in downtown Toronto.
With only one time fault over two days of intense competition, Henselwood walked away victorious after topping a field of 25 competitors in the $70,000 Championship.
In second place with a double-clear ride was Chris Pratt of Belfountain, ON, riding Susan Grange’s Rivendell. Heading into the second round, Royal Horse Show favourite, Ian Millar of Perth, ON, was in first place after a speedy win on November 4 aboard In Style, also owned by Susan Grange. A rail on the second to last fence of the Leopoldo Palacios-designed course bumped Millar to third place.
Sitting in fourth place after Friday’s Round One, Henselwood tactfully rode Stacie Ryan’s Black Ice, a Dutch Warmblood gelding by Indoctro, to victory. Surprisingly, the 10-year-old gelding is new to the Grand Prix level. What’s more is that in all but one other competition this season, Henselwood’s student, Kelley Small, showed the black horse.
“Black Ice is a horse that we identified in Europe as a five year old,” stated the first-time Champion. “He's been slowly working his way up the ladder over the years, but he has never jumped at this level before. It feels very rewarding to develop a young horse into the athlete you hoped they would eventually be.”
While Henselwood was earning her first Canadian Show Jumping Championship title, Pratt was also winning his first Reserve Champion title.
