Canada Shows Strength in All Divisions at Dressage at Devon CDI3* - CDI-Y

Pennsylvania, USA --- Canadian dressage riders took many of the top placings at this years Dressage at Devon CDI */CDI-Y held September 29 to October 2, 2005 in Pennsylvania, USA.

After missing the majority of the 2005 competition season, Cindy Ishoy and her Athens Olympic partner Proton made a strong comeback in the Grand Prix division, coming second with 68.333%. Also competing in the Grand Prix for Freestyle class was Julia Vysniauskas & Syntax (4th - 65.292%), Ashley Holzer & Imperioso (5th - 64.625%) and Jacqueline Brooks & Gran Gesto (7th - 64.500%). The class was won by Devon favourites George Williams and his expressive mare Rocher with a score of 71.417%.

On Saturday night, the popular Grand Prix Freestyle took center stage in the Dixon Oval under the floodlights. Ishoy and Proton maintained their momentum from the first day of competition and placed a strong second with 74.925%. Olympic team-mate Ashley Holzer & Imperioso climbed to fourth place with 71.500% with Julia Vysniauskas & Syntax placing 5th (71.000%) and Jacqueline Brooks & Gran Gesto 7th (69.875%).

Holzer also competed in the Grand Prix for Speciale class with Gambol, an 11-year-old Dutch stallion (Gabor x Lector) owned by Dr. Diane Fellows and Holzer. Although only in his first year of competition at the Grand Prix level, Gambol put in a very solid performance to earn 65.375% from the judging panel and fifth place honours. Nancy MacLachlan and Ariston, another new Canadian Grand Prix combination, earned 63.208% to secure eighth and Olympian Belinda Trussell and her latest Grand Prix mount Blue Hors Testarossa were close behind in ninth position with 62.833%.

In the Grand Prix Speciale, Gambol climbed the leaderboard to receive an impressive 70.680% and third place. Maclachlan and Ariston also improved their performance with a 66.400% to claim fifth while Trussell & Blue Hors Testarossa raised their score to 66.400% for ninth.

The Advance division saw a very large and competitive field of horse/rider combinations. At the end of the day, it was Ashley Holzer and the elegant Maximillian, owned by Ellen Lazarus, who emerged as the winners of the Prix St. Georges class of 43, earning a score of 68.250% from the panel. Many Canadian riders took part in this division including Julia Vysniauskas & Papillion (6th - 66.167%), Tom Dvorak & Beaumarchais, owned by Sue Holden, (9th - 65.167%), Cheryl Meisner Linssen & Lucky Strike (12th - 64.750% ) and John MacPherson & Laurentino (28th - 62.750%).

In the Intermediaire, it was Julia Vysniauskas and Papillion who rode away with the first place ribbon on a score of 70.000%. Third place went to Holzer & Maximillian with 69.167% with Dvorak and Beaumarchais rising to sixth with 67.000% and Meisner Linssen & Lucky Strike also improving to eight place with 65.583%.

Five Canadian riders qualified to ride the Intermediaire Freestyle on the final day of competition. Ashley Holzer and Maxamillian rode once more into the winner’s circle with 73.975%. Dvorak and Beamarchais as well as Meisner Linssen and Lucky Strike were also in the top five of the class with 70.950% (3rd) and 70.575% (4th) respectively. Vysniauskas and Papillion earned 68.575% for seventh place.

In the FEI Division for 6 Year Olds, Jacqueline Brooks and Balmoral, owned by Brinc Ltd, Nick & Jean Vinions and Anne & John Welch, continued their very successful 2005 competition season with a third place in the qualifying class (77.400%) and a win in the final class (78.00%).

The FEI Young Rider Division was dominated by Ontario’s Leah Wilson. Wilson started the competition with a decisive win in the Young Rider Team class with 66.741% aboard Amusant, almost six percentage points over second place finisher Emma Gaskell & Figaro. Wilson also placed third in the same class Dostoevsky (60.815%).

Wilson continued her grip of first place in the Individual class, this time with Dostoevsky who received 67.000%. Wilson was her own closest competition in this class, winning the second place ribbon on Amusant, a 10-year-old Hannoverian gelding, with 66.417%. In the Young Rider Freestyle, it was Dostoevsky, an 11-year-old Russian Warmblood, who took Wilson to a second place finish with 71.958%.

Canada was also very ably represented in the FEI Pony Division where Alexandra Dvorak won the Team test aboard Ronja, earning 65.263% from the judges. The pair also placed third in the Individual class with 58.500%.

The international judging panel at this year’s Dressage at Devon included Stephen Clarke (FEI O – GBR), Barnabas Mandi (FEI O - HUN), Uwe Mechlem (FEI O – GER), Linda Zang (FEI O – USA), Jayne Ayers (FEI I – USA), Marian Cunningham (FEI I – USA), Jennie Loriston-Clarke (FEI I - GBR) , Joan Macartney (FEI I – CAN), Martin Richenhagen (FEI I – GER), Jacques van Daele (FEI I – BEL).
